I think that most guys imagine what it would be like to date a woman who was out of their league. You think about women with supermodel good looks and you imagine that you would have to deal with lots of competition from other guys, because you know that other guys would definitely be checking her out. While it is true that when you date a really good looking woman, you are going to have to deal with the reality that other men are going to be scoping her out, does that really even matter?

The idea that you really have to worry about other guys is one that I can relate to, and I think most men can. The thing that I have learned from experience is, it does not matter nearly as much as you think it would. In your mind, you probably feel like if you were to try to date a beautiful woman, you would always have to be on your guard because there would be plenty of men who would be willing to take your place. I don’t doubt that is true, it’s just that you don’t really have to be that stressed out about it.

Rugby League or Rugby Union

Stemming from the 19th century, rugby was born at a boarding school in the town of Rugby, Warwickshire. Yet since around the same time a split was made in allegiances between what is now called rugby league and rugby union. While both games share the same origin they are vastly different in how they are played.

The rules of rugby league encourage a faster, more spectator-friendly kind of game. One of the main differences is that league has disallowed several opportunities for possession to be contested that union has retained such as contesting a ball after the tackle and on the ground in rucks and in mauls. Therefore in rugby league there are much fewer stoppages in play and the action and flow is kept pretty constant. As a comparison league has the ball, on average, around 50 minutes out of 80 minutes compared to rugby union which typically has the ball in play for only 35. Also rugby league has thirteen men on the field while rugby union has fifteen. It is because of this that rugby league is most commonly thought of as a more physically demanding sport. Even the field is different between the two sports. The union field is 144 metres long by 70 meters wide while the league field is 112 metres long by 68 metres wide. Both fields have a goal post though in the shape of a letter ‘H’ used for field goals, penalty goals and conversions.

Rugby league is very popular especially in Australia, England and New Zealand. It is played in other nations as well. The sport was created in the nineteenth century-officially came into vogue on August, 1985. Rugby basically developed from football but moved away from it, with different sets of rules. News about the sport was flashing in the news channels a few years back due to the Rugby league betting scandal. It gained media attention for quite some time especially after some men were found guilty in some betting scandals a few months ago. Rugby differs from football mainly due to the ways in which the ball is used in both the games. Football is played with a round ball that has to be kicked while Rugby uses an oval shaped ball that can be carried as well as kicked Two points are given for a goal in Rugby and the players have the scope of converting a goal if they score a try. A game is eighty minutes long and each team has six downs or tackles for aiming a try.

The Rugby League World Cup is the most awaited tournament of the sport. But the Four Nations Cup also attracts a large number of sport-lovers. The betting fever rises during the season of the Four Nations. Another big occasion for the Rugby is the Challenge Cup. It is difficult to choose the best among the four teams in the Rugby league and many a time it has happened that the Challenge cup has gone to none of the teams. In the final match, the man of the match is usually chosen by the league reporters and the prestigious Lance Todd Trophy is handed over to the show stealer. The Super league is another big game. It is basically a European Tournament, but the majority of the teams are from United Kingdom.

The weeks after the Premier League season finishes are a tough test for football fans. They know that a nine -month long discussion of great goals, footballing tactics and controversial chickens must come to an end, leaving football fans with a terrible hangover. So, it is a natural reaction for fans to look back and analyze every possible talking point of the season. Who was the best player, the best team, the biggest disappointment? The same questions are asked each year, in the knowledge that by the next week these conversations will cease to exist. Yet, this has been a season to remember, and on Sunday the Premier League ended with one of the greatest finishes in footballing history. This hangover will last longer than most.

Man City’s 44-year wait for glory over their neighbors came down to five excruciating minutes. With the score at 2-1 to QPR and only stoppage time to play, Roberto Mancini looked on the verge of madness. However, once Edin Dzeko headed the equaliser for Man City the stadium erupted again. Then Aguero’s winner showed the touch of class that has made Man City worthy champions this season. The red side of Manchester did all they could with a 2-0 victory over Sunderland. For the majority of the 90 minutes Man Utd’s name was on the trophy. So, it was a tough day for last season’s champions as a 20th League title was not written in their stars.

So you sucked in midget, didn’t get drafted into junior and discovered girls. You realized your dream of making it to the big show was over, you dropped out of hockey and decided to focus on education with a little fun on the weekends. Over the next dozen or so years you finished school, built a career and got married. You have the beginnings of a paunch and are 15 pounds overweight. You are happy and content for the most part but you feel you are missing out on something. Life is becoming mundane, boring, humdrum and all too predictable. And then, a life altering discovery. Beer league hockey.

Over beers with a buddy you learn how you can have fun, get some much needed exercise and enjoy that locker room camaraderie you have missed since your midget days. You only have to commit for a couple of hours on Thursday nights and it is a social night out with the boys. What the hell, you think. With just a little practice you can still skate and all the old, dormant skills will soon come back. The wife won’t mind, after all it’s only one night a week and the paunch will soon disappear. It’s all settled and you sign up for beer league hockey. The very next day, on your lunch break you manage to rack up a little over $1500.00 on your VISA. You purchase everything you will need. Skates, helmet, shin pads, gloves, elbow and shoulder pads fill your shopping bags. Oh yes, and most importantly, the jock strap and cup. Oops, almost forgot. You’ll need a couple of sticks, some tape and a puck. Another $250.00.

The Premier League

The English Premier League has finally agreed to use goal-line technology from the start of the 2013-14 season, which will remove any uncertainty whether the ball has crossed the goal line, and help officials make the correct decision as to whether a goal should be awarded or not. The debate about using the technology has raged for many years, with many high profile figures within the game campaigning for and others contesting the need for such technology. The main arguments against installing goal line technology was that the natural flow of a game would be disrupted, uncertainty as to whether the technology would be accurate enough and whether the expense of such a venture could be justified for apparatus that would be seldom used.

Football’s governing body FIFA had always resisted the calls for goal line monitoring equipment but agreed to review its stance following Frank Lampard’s disallowed goal, which was seen to clearly cross the goal line, during England’s game against Germany in the 2010 World Cup. There have been several notable instances in various football matches over recent years when perfectly good goals have been disallowed and later shown by television replays that the ball had crossed the goal line and the goal should have been allowed

The Media Versus the Premier League Manager

It’s a recurring theme each and every season. The media picks a few managers whose jobs seem to be in jeopardy and they proceed to hound them with the same questions over and over again. Two things happen because of this: they either get the sack or they are able to ride it out and move on. I understand that it is a reporters job to ask hard questions and try to get answers out to the public, but so often it seems that there are a few of these managers that they go after with questions that border on ridiculous.

To me this seems like sensationalism, just a way to sell more papers or get more clicks with outrageous headlines. In the past year the media has hit on several managers that have ended up giving them just what they want, another rant to grab the headlines. This is such a recurring theme that a Google search for “Premier League Manager Rants” gives you 2,010,000 results. The first page of results has 3 different “Top 5 Manger Rants”. I’m sure there are plenty of pages in there that don’t match up, but the point is that there a plenty of managers that have “lost it” in front of the press. What is it about the media that causes so many tirades? Is it something to do with being a manager or is it a fault of the media? In many ways, I think it’s a combination. The press tends to go after managers that are already feeling the stress of the position. Often this includes pressure from fans or the team struggling to get results in the league. It’s inevitable that a manager not doing well will begin to feel the burden of the job, but I think there are times that the media’s role in it goes beyond simply reporting. Too often reporters continue to ask rather asinine questions that they know the answer to, know the manager does not have an answer, or one that has been asked repeatedly already.

The Other Champions League

A big problem for CCL is that there isn’t enough star power for the media to want to cover it. There are no globally known names that are in the competition besides Landon Donovan, and he isn’t even with the Galaxy squad at the moment. Quite frankly, no one really seems to care about the CCL. Would there be a nationally televised game on ESPN if an American side didn’t get to the final of the CCL? Probably not. Come to think of it they probably wouldn’t put it on ESPN2 if TWO American teams made it to the final. The CCL just seems like a waste of time to most people, why watch CCL when you could watch college basketball or heck even spring training baseball. The lack of caring when it comes to CCL is due in large part to the MLS not being globally recognized as a good league. It also has a lot to due with the quality of the other leagues that contribute to the CCL’s pool of teams.

Just like when it comes to the MLS I advise you to give the CCL a try, it might not give you the same exhilaration as watching Real Madrid v Manchester United in the UCL but there is some quality ball that is played in the CCL if you catch the two right teams playing.
